J&K stands for Jammu and Kashmir. We all know that this state is now a union territory. This UT has it’s own J&K Public Service Commission. Hence, today we will look at the JPSC Exam in detail. We will also look at JKPSC’s recruitment method. In short, we will try to cover everything related to PSC Jammu. It is a constitutional body. Hence, it’s of great importance. It ensures fair recruitment based on merit. JKPSC Exam takes place every year. Hence, we will also look at some of it’s latest notices. About JKPSC – JKPSC Exam

Jammu and Kashmir Public Service Commission is one of the oldest bodies in India. It conducts the JKPSC Exam. Every year it recruits candidates for prime posts in civil services. Its headquarters is located in Sri Nagar. It is headed by a Chairman. Moreover, there are around 8-9 members of the commission.

It conducts exams for various posts. It also releases the JKPSC exam syllabus. Further, it also notifies the number of vacancies. The chairman and members of the PSC Jammu are appointed by the Governor.

J&K Public Service Commission is located in Srinagar. It is a constitutional body. It conducts the JKPSC Exam.

JKPSC Exam Eligibility

J&K Public Service Commission also declares the eligibility for the exam. Hence, let’s look at this aspect of the JKPSC Exam. Firstly, the candidate must be a graduate. In other words, you must be at least 21 years of age. Secondly, you must be a permanent citizen of J&K. Further, the maximum age cap is 32 years to attempt JKPSC Exam. Other criteria includes, Height, Chest and Expansion measurement. Let’s look at them one by one. The criteria is different for males and females. Firstly, let’s talk about the male category. The height required for males is 165cm. The chest girth needed is 84cm. Further, the expansion required is 5cm.

For females, the requirement is different. Firstly, the height required is 150cm. The chest girth needed is 79cm. Moreover, the expansion required is 5cm. Therefore, the requirements are quite flexible for women candidates. However, there’s a distinct criterion for candidates from Leh/Kargil. For males, the height needed is 160cm. The chest girth needed is 79cm. And the expansion needed is 5cm. Further, women candidates require a height of 145cm. The chest girth needed is 79cm. Further, the expansion needed is 5cm.

Exam pattern for PSC Jammu

JKPSC recruitment is based on 3 stages of exam. Firstly, there is a preliminary test. Secondly, there’s a mains test. Finally, candidates have to undergo interview test. The first one is objective type. Whereas, the second one is subjective in nature. Further, the interview is a personality test. Hence, the JKPSC Exam is on the lines of UPSC. Let’s look at each stage one by one.

Stage I: Prelims

J&K Public Service Commission conducts a prelims exam. This is the first stage of the JKPSC recruitment process. One must clear this exam to qualify for mains. There are 2 papers in this stage. However, both of them are objective in nature. Hence, both papers totally account for 450 marks. It is qualifying in nature. Hence, no merit is taken into consideration. Each paper is for two hours. UPSC has a provision of negative marking. However, JKPSC Exam does not have this provision. Paper I is GS. It accounts for 150 marks. Paper-II is an optional subject. Hence, this paper accounts for 300 marks.

Stage II: Mains

The second stage of the JKPSC Exam is the mains test. Candidates who qualify in prelims are eligible for this exam. However, unlike prelims, this is a subjective test. Hence, the answers written are essay type. There are 9 papers in this JKPSC Exam. However, 2 of them are qualifying in nature. Whereas, rest are merit-based. Each paper lasts for 3 hours. Successful candidates are called for an interview by the J&K Public Service Commission. Hence, it’s important to clear this stage of the JKPSC Recruitment.

Interview

PSC Jammu conducts interviews of successful candidates. This is the last stage of JKPSC Recruitment. It tests the personality of the candidate. Hence, it’s a distinct test from the JKPSC Exam. Candidates who fail to score in more than one subject are not invited for the interview. Hence, it’s important to clear all papers gracefully. Therefore, this stage is similar to the interview stage of UPSC. It tests the mental caliber of aspirants.

JKPSC Exam Syllabus

Paper two is based on an Optional Subject. Paper one is general studies. It contains the following topics:

  • General Science.
  • Current Affairs.
  • Polity.
  • History.
  • Geography.
  • Environment.
  • Economic and Social Development.

Next, let’s look at the mains syllabus. This section consists of 9 papers. Firstly, there’s GS Paper I. It is an English Language Paper. Paper-II is an English Essay paper. Paper III and IV are GS Papers. Rest all papers are of Optional Subjects. However, English is a qualifying paper. It’s syllabus consists of comprehension. Further, it also consists of precise writing. Additionally, there are short essays and vocabulary related topics. GS Syllabus is the same as listed for prelims above.

J&K Public Service Commission releases the syllabus notice every year. The Jammu and Kashmir Public Service Commission also sets the rules of examination.

JKPSC Recruitment and Vacancy

Every year PSC Jammu releases its vacancy notification. Let’s look at the 2020 vacancy notice releases by JKPSC. Junior Scale of J&K Administrative Service has a total of 269 vacancies. Further, J&K Police Service has a total of 2 vacancies only. Whereas, J&K Accounts Service has a total of 6 vacancies. Totally, there are 277 vacancies. However, these vacancies are divided into various categories.

FAQs

Can I attempt JKPSC with UPSC?

Yes, you can attempt both the exams together. Because PSC Jammu and UPSC have almost the same syllabus. Make sure you read the syllabus on their website before making a decision.

Does JKPSC recruitment depend upon the vacancy?

Yes, it does. When there’s a higher vacancy, recruitment is more. However, don’t be over dependent or lose hope if there’s low vacancy. There’s always room for talent and hard work!

What are qualifying papers?

In the JKPSC Exam, there are 2 types of papers. Firstly, there’s a qualifying paper. Secondly, there’s a merit based paper. You must score the qualifying marks in to qualify for the merit based paper.

How long does it take to prepare for PSC Jammu Exam?

A year to 8 months is enough to prepare for this exam. However, you can start preparing before a year to prepare well.

Is it necessary to undertake coaching for JKPSC Exam?

No, it’s not compulsory to join a coaching institute. However, if you join a good coaching you may receive in depth guidance to start your preparation.
