Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan App

Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan came into existence on December 3, 2015. Further, the main of the campaign is to essentially make all buildings more easily accessible to differently-abled and physically abled people. The government Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan looks to make at least 50 percent of all government buildings in the national capital. Further, it aims to help persons with disabilities to gain universal access, equal opportunity for development, independent living, and participation.

Probably one wants to know why this act is essential? So, Article 9 of UNCRPD says an obligation on all the signatory governments to take appropriate measures to ensure to persons with disabilities access. Access areas involve transportation, information, and communications, including information and communications technologies and systems and other facilities and services. Further, persons with a disability must get equal opportunities and protection of Rights and full participation under the act 1995 under sections 44, 45, and 46.   • Provision of toilets for wheelchair users
  • Ramps in public buildings
  • Ramps in hospitals, health centers and other rehabilitation centers.
  • Symbols that help disable people in elevators or lifts.

Objectives

As we have mentioned earlier, this act mainly aims to serve people under the persons with disabilities. Further, it defines anybody with Blindness, Low Vision, Leprosy, Hearing impairment, mental illness, and Locomotor disability. Besides, the government takes all measures to make the buildings disabled-friendly. It also includes changing the structure, but also changing the sidewalk, the railings, and anything that may block the flow of pedestrians.

Further, it will not only focus on the buildings but also on the vehicles. Besides, around 50% of the buildings to be disabled-friendly. Then, to make 25% of the public transport’s disabled-friendly by 2017. Further, 50%  of railway stations were converted into fully accessible railway stations from March 2018. 50% of government buildings are available in the ten most influential cities in December 2019. Then, accessibility audit of 50% of all governments includes both  Central and State Governments websites and converted into fully accessible websites by March 2017.

They also aim to provide free motorized tricycles to people with 70-90% disability. Further, each state must select 50 – 100 public buildings friendly to people with disabilities. Then, the government will establish a special university for differently-abled people with a corpus of ₹1,700 crores.

How it works?

In the initial step, the purpose will be time-bound, and it will take control of IT and social media to upgrade knowledge. Further, the state government has 50 – 100 public installations in huge cities. Therefore, it will seek contract people from various walks of life like students, working professionals, and officers. Further, hospitals, tourism, and police station are built across the country with the help of the  Ministry of Tourism, Ministry of Health Ministry of Home and Family Welfare.

Targets of the Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan 

The campaign aims to build up to three verticals: environment, transportation ecosystem, and information & communication eco-system. Further, making all the international airports of category A1, A & B railway stations completely accessible to persons with disabilities. Then, in the converting of at least 10% of the public carriers owned by the Government of India. Further, by March 2018, 50% of the public documents were decided by the state and the central government. One needs to use social media effectively for awareness among people.

It is the most important thing of the Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan. Further, it is one of the vital things to help the disabled community primarily. Later, if the buildings are of good quality, it will help everyone in society.

In August 2016, an online Sugamya Pustakalaya (Accessible Library) was launched in collaboration with the National Institute of Visually Handicapped. Further, around 400 websites of the government of India were made accessible.
