Sagayam IAS Officer

U Sagayam is a former Indian civil servant who formerly served as Vice Chairman of Science City in Chennai. Further, he served in the Indian Administrative Service as an officer in the Tamil Nadu cadre and Central Secretariat Service. We will understand U Sagayam IAS politics, elections, and his journey so far.

U Sagayam IAS is the youngest in the family, and he belongs to the village called Perunchunai village in Tamil Nadu. Talking about his education, he completed schooling at the Tamil- medium panchayat elementary school. Further, he attended a government higher secondary school in Ellapatti. Later, he completed PG in social work and law. He joined the Central Secretariat Service in the year 1989, after clearing the UPSC exam. In 1991 he joined IAS as a Sub-divisional Magistrate of Ootacamund. He worked for a period of 7 months, in Delhi and he resigned from the Central Secretariat Service. Further, he took the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission; he joined Tamil Nadu state Civil Service.

Journey of U Sagayam IAS

Let us now talk about his journey; he is truly an inspiration to all. Interestingly, he has the door bears that say, “Reject bribes, hold your head high.” He is the person who is towards morality, and there is no space for unethical actions. Further, he has been transferred 20 times, and he created the history of becoming the first IAS officer in Tamil Nadu. He had sealed the Pepsi Cola’s bottling plant in 2000 near Chennai when he found many dirty bottles to confiscating 5,000 subsidized domestic gas cylinders within 3 days in 2004. He also sealed a multi-national company in Kanchipuram district as a district revenue officer-cum additional district magistrate in 1999.

Career Insights

His career was eventful; as already mentioned, he reportedly faced 25 transfers in 27 years of service. Further, he entered the state government service as a Group 1 officer from the village Perunchunai in Pudukottai district in the farmer’s family.

Sagayam IAS Election

In 2011, the election Commission of India posted him as the Collector of Madhurai, just before the Assembly elections. The taught IAS officer being straightforward will help withstand him in good stead for a district known for bribing voters. Along with the two other IPS officers, namely,  P. Kannappan, Commissioner of Police, Madurai City, and Asra Garg, superintendent of Madurai rural district and U Sagayam IAS, they were able to prevent multiple attempts at bribing voters. Further, they even registered the case against the son of then Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, M.K. Alagiri, Union minister.

Later, U Sagayam IAS Officer known as a friend of the poor. As he started Uzhavan Unavagam (farmers’ foodcourt), poor farmers can sell traditional dishes. Further, he also helped in the rehabilitation of three great-grandchildren of freedom fighter V. O. Chidambaram. He uploaded all the details of his assets as Namakkal Collector on the district website. This action made him enter politics to cleanse the system.
