Like we know, there are three stages in the exam. Hence, firstly, we will talk about the preliminary papers. The WBPSC WBCS exam has only one paper in the preliminary stage. This is an objective-type test. Hence, the questions are in the MCQ form. This paper is also known as the general studies paper. Moreover, it carries 200 marks in total. We know that most of the state PCS and the central PCS exam have aptitude tests like CSAT. However, here, there is no aptitude test. Hence, candidates just have to study for one paper. You can give maximum attention and effort to general studies due to the aptitude paper. Hence, you should make the most of it during your preparation. Moving ahead, let us now look at the WBCS mains exam pattern and syllabus PDF details.

The WBCS syllabus consists of current affairs, history, geography, economics, etc. However, there is only on GS paper in the prelims exam as per the WPSC WBCS mains exam pattern PDF.

The exam has six compulsory papers in the mains examination. Hence, there is no option whether to write the subject or no. These are mandatory in nature. Anyone appearing for the exam cannot avoid even a single one of them. The mains exam is both objective and subjective in nature. On the other hand, UPSC mains are only subjective in nature. In addition to the six compulsory papers, you have to write two optional papers as well. You can choose a suitable optional subject from a list. Paper one and two are of a conventional nature. Paper 3-6 are of an objective nature. Moreover, the optional papers are conventional in nature. Each paper is of 200 marks as per the WBCS Exam Pattern Syllabus.

Lastly, there is an interview test. The interview test is of 200 marks. Hence, every paper is of 200 marks in this exam. You should take the optional papers only if you wish to join the Group A or Group B services. The four MCQ or objective type papers are as follows. The first two are called the General Studies one and General studies two papers. The third one is based on the Indian constitution and the Indian Economy. Moreover, the fourth MCQ type paper is about Arithmetic and reasoning. You can write the mains exam either in Bengali or English. If you disclose your identity in any way on the paper, there will be a 10 percent deduction of marks from your score. Read about other different civil service exams here: click now.

WBPSC WBCS Prelims syllabus

We have talked in great detail about the WBPSC WBCS exam pattern. Now we will talk about the complete WBCS prelims syllabus with PDF. We will try to list the syllabus in detail for your greater understanding. There are eight topics in the prelims syllabus. Each topic is assigned 25 marks in the exam. The exam duration is 2.5 hours for prelims. The first topic is English Composition. The topics under this subject are synonyms & antonyms, idioms & phrases, vocabulary tests, and phrasal verbs. Moreover, it also has homophones and fill-in-the-blank questions from this subject. Secondly, there is a general science subject in prelims. The different topics under science are as follows. Firstly, there can be questions from general appreciation, understanding of science, matters of everyday observation, and basic knowledge around science.

Thirdly, there are questions from current affairs topics as well. Other topics in the WBCS prelims syllabus are History, Geography, and Indian Polity. Moreover, the paper also focuses on the Indian Economy, Indian National Movement, and the General mental ability topics.

WBCS Mains syllabus

All papers are common for every group service, except for the optional papers. Paper one is a language paper. You can either choose one of the five listed languages. They are Bengali, Hindi, Urdu, Nepali, and Santali. This paper will contain questions like letter writing, precis writing, composition, and translation. First paper is therefore a regional language paper. However, the second paper is an English Language paper. Even this paper has the same topics as mentioned for the regional language paper. However, the paper has to be strictly written in the English language and there is no choice. Paper III revolves around History and Geography. Paper III is also called as GS paper one. Moreover, the paper focuses on the Indian National Movement from history. Secondly, it focuses on the Geography of Bengal specifically.

Many candidates fail to understand the WBCS syllabus and exam pattern before starting their prep. However, it is a very imp part of your prep.

Editor’s Note | WBCS Syllabus

Here we will conclude our article. In today’s article, we talked about the WBPSC WBCS Exam Pattern and syllabus. Then, we talked about the WBCS prelims and mains syllabus. Thus we understood that there is only one prelims paper. This paper is comprehensive and contains all different GS topics. Hence, one needs to just apply their GS knowledge of mains to prelims. The topics remain the same for both stages. However, there is only a minor difference. Moreover, one needs to clearly understand the nature of the exam. Firstly, you need to decide the service you are applying for. Thus, you will understand whether you need to study for your optional subjects or no. If you apply for group A or B services, optional papers are inevitable. Thus, you have two extra subjects other than the basics.

However, if you apply for the Group C or D services, there are only six papers. On the other hand, group A and B service applicants have to write 8 papers. However, the WBPSC WBCS syllabus remains the same for all services. Moreover, the prelims stage is common for all services. You should regularly check the WBPSC WBCS prelims and mains syllabus and exam pattern PDF for better progress tracking. Moroever, take help from different test series and previous year’s question papers for additional practice. Remember the exam does not have an aptitude paper in prelims which helps you to score well in GS. Make the best use of this opportunity and practice solving both objective and subjective type questions for the exam.
